I am reading Venus in Exile as a reference for this essay. It has given me many different form of what is considered beauty and what is not. It also has several words that are key ti this reading. Some of the words that are being use we have studied in class. For instance: Avant-garde a pushing of boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm. It is considered by some some the hallmark of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism. There is on key term that is used quite a bit throughout the reading Ornament it is a decoration used to embellish parts of a building or object. Most ornaments do not include human figures, if they are small compared to the overall scale. These definitions i received from wikipedia. When you look up and find different definitions to words that you are reading it gives you a whole new outlook on the subject matter. In the reading it gives many examples of how different individuals see the beauty in different ways in works of art. It also explains artists opinions of each others style and techniques,and what artists sees and considers beauty.
While looking at books at the HCC eastside campus, I came across a book called "The power of Art." by, Simon Schama it deals with the subject of what makes art effective, it has a lot of example pictures and it spans some of the changes in art, from Caravaggio to the modern age.
